Population and Studies Training Center, Brown University
Postdoctoral Research Associate Position Available

Brown University’s Population Studies and Training Center (PSTC) expects to have an opening for a two-year postdoctoral research associate position beginning January 1, 2009.  This individual will be appointed to a research position at the PSTC and also have limited teaching responsibilities through the Department of Sociology.  The PSTC is an interdisciplinary research and training unit of Brown University that provides an environment for intellectual exchange, infrastructure support services, and project development support for a very productive, interdisciplinary group of population-related faculty, postdoctoral fellows and researchers, and graduate students. The PSTC is distinguished by its commitment to collaboration across disciplinary and institutional boundaries as well as its strong portfolio of research in developing country settings, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. (More information is available at http://www.pstc.brown.edu.)

The successful applicant for this position will be a key member of the PSTC’s Ethiopia research team, working primarily at Brown, with the opportunity for occasional work in the field site, on an ongoing project that conducts policy-relevant scientific research on adolescent life, physical and reproductive health in Ethiopia.  The associate will be integrally involved in state-of-the-art analysis and scholarly writing related to findings from the Ethiopia research.  Additionally, this individual will have limited teaching of one graduate-level course on a demographic topic in the Sociology Department each year. The position also includes substantial time for the postdoctoral research associate’s own research including preparing papers for publication and submitting applications for independent research funding.

Postdoctoral research associates are considered full and vital members of the PSTC community, and as such are expected to regularly attend the weekly PSTC Colloquia, present to the colloquia during the second year of their appointment, present research at the Population Association (PAA) meetings, and submit articles for publication.  Postdoctoral research associates must have a Ph.D. in sociology, demography, or a related social science discipline.

Screening of applications will begin on October 1, 2008, and will continue until the position is filled. Send letter of application with CV, information about research interests and plans, future employment goals, and examples of written work. It is preferred that all application materials be sent via email as a single pdf document, but applications sent via regular mail will be accepted.  In addition, please have three letters of recommendation sent.
